Lovable Lemon: My Secret to 100% All-Round Healthy-ness

Yesterday, while I was watching Tv, I was quite impressed with an advertisement on diet coke. All the while hatching plans to cajole my children into dumping those fizzy drinks and be more 'diet conscious'. Any parent would know the treacherous situation we land ourselves in when we try to prohibit our children from drinking something which they are absolutely adamant about. Those tantrums!


Therefore, feeling rather proud of modern science in solving problems of mothers like me, I sat down with my laptop and did a search on that magic element which is turning regular fizzy drink to a diet one.

And the result made me sit up straight - very straight.


I need not tell you that in the attempt to reduce calories, they have added a far greater number of health, and metabolic hazards to the list.


An NHS article concluded that "Drinking more than two sweetened drinks per day was linked with being roughly twice as likely to have diabetes. This large US-representative cross-sectional study indicates that overweight and obese people drink more diet drinks than healthy-weight people, but still consume the same amount of calories as those drinking sugar-sweetened drinks.


The extra calories were made up by eating more food."


From my flight of fancy, I hit the hard ground with a loud thud. And what more in my attempt to read about diet coke, I had also read up about regular fizzy drinks. Which made me feel all the more guilty of relenting to my children's demands.


You see, habits are easy to form but very difficult to get rid of. As so aptly said


"Chains of habit are too light to be felt until they are too heavy to be broken." - Warren Buffett


My children's obstinacy is just a reflection of me. I know the battle would forge on. There has to be another way. I decided to give mom a call.


Sometimes the easiest solution is right in front of our eyes. You write about it, you share it, you recommend it and forget to follow it yourself. Of all my previous posts on blood pressure, blood sugar, diabetes, and what not I completely omitted to mention the humble lemon.


Now whatever junk food and fizzy drinks my children are consuming, I can simply negotiate them to add one more drink to their list of demands. That is a glass of fresh lemon juice, made with non-artificial sugar and Himalayan black salt.


Lemon is rich in Vitamin C and is packed with Bioflavonoids. Lemon is a natural detoxifier. Lemon helps to balance the sodium effect in the body. So every time you binge on fries and salty snack, do make it a point to make yourself a glass of my freshly squeezed natural lemon juice.


It will flush out toxins, extra sodium, fats, oils, neutralise sugar and give a boost to your digestive juices, that means you won't be or feel bloated in spite of eating all those fries.


Here is my healthy quick fix this summer. Take a glass of lukewarm water


  • Squeeze in a quarter slice of lemon.

  • Add 1/2 teaspoon of sugar (if you are brave, you can skip the sugar. Replace sugar with Honey for a healthier punch)

  • Add 1/2 teaspoon of Himalayan Black Salt

  • Mix Well

Add a few chopped mint leaves in summer and your children won't ask for another fizzy drink again. And to keep your children happy, here are some recipes with lemon. Try them out.


Hah! Now I know why Joan Collins said: "If life throws you a lemon - make lemonade". I just did!
